Found it! It's always good to have more information than you need. In this case, however, I suspect that it's the video card rather than anything else.
Check the video card documentation in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc -- you'll probably find information about the chipset you need to be looking for in /var/log/XFree86.0.log.
