Uhm, I have been running with a permanent change for lang=c for some time now.
Just to make sure, I tested your recommendation. It failed as before. Did you
try it on 5.0.7 or 5.0.8 before posting your suggestion? If so, did it work
for you? If so, I would still like to know why it does not work on my system.

Oh, I have 

export LESS=M
export LANG=en_US SUPPORTED="en_US" LC_MESSAGES=C LC_ALL=C

in /etc/bashrc.
