There are two ways to play CDs. The first one requires a direct audio
cable between your CD drive and your sound card (or chipset). The
second one reads the audio samples from the CD and plays them back via
your sound card. 

XMMS lower than and equal to 1.2.7 does not support the 2nd method
itself. You would need to get the new XMMS 1.2.8 or install a separate
plug-in, such as "xmms-cdread" provided by http://www.fedora.us
