i just did my first kernel rebuild on a system with grub as the boot loader. when i try to boot the kernel, the machine halts, saying it cannot find the file initrd-2.4.21.img. the machine expects this file to be in the /boot dir. however, i do not recall this file being generated when i built the new kernel. i looked around in /usr/src/linux but did not see this file.

where can i find this file or what do i need to do to build it so that i can boot the new kernel?

man mkinitrd

P.

thanks. i suppose i meant to ask, why wasn't this file ever needed on my lilo installed linux machines? i looked in the /boot of a 7.1 box i have that uses lilo, and initrd is not present.
