What I've done is to avoid this is to create two symlinks: /usr/java/jdk -> /usr/java/<current version> /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so -> /usr/java/jdk/jre/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so All Java JDK or JRE references, such as my PATH, JAVA_HOME and JDK_HOME environment variables, use /usr/java/jdk as their base. That way, only one symlink needs to be updated after an installation, and I can have multiple Java installations without collision. For example, pre-releases can be evaluated without disturbing my "normal" environment.
