Hi all folks,

Is there command line to read a tarball without decompressing it similar
to reading an ISO image without having it burnt on CD?

Yes. tar.

For example

      tar tf linux-2.4.22.tar
      tar ztf linux-2.4.22.tar.gz
      tar jtf linux-2.4.24.tar.bz2

"tar vtf" and similar are more verbose. See the man page for real details.
