USB2, insmod ehci-hcd errors?

I have just installed Red Hat 9 on my new Compaq Presario 3000 (3017CL).

By and large, once installed the updated SiS M650 video driver for XFree
4.3.0, most things work well.

However, I can't get the external USB ports to work.

During boot I get messages on the console (which do not show up in any
logs)

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Initializing USB controllers: ohci-
Initializing USB controllers: echi-hcd:
insmode errors, stuff about usually caused by conflicts and/or bad
parameters,
more errors including "no such device"
------------------------------------------------------------------
(they whiz by pretty fast)

Does anyone know how to configure/fix this problem so I can get at least
USB 1.1 level ports working?

The relevant portion of dmesg follows:
