Help with SCSI bus stuff

I've got two DLT tape drives (HP Surestore-VS80) connected to an adaptec
AHA-2940UW. Both the drive and the controller should be capable of doing
40MB/s transfers. The cable connecting them is an LVD cable. For some
reason it will not go any faster than 20MB/s.

scsi0 : Adaptec AIC7XXX EISA/VLB/PCI SCSI HBA DRIVER, Rev 6.2.8
        <Adaptec 2940 Ultra SCSI adapter>
        aic7880: Ultra Wide Channel A, SCSI Id=7, 16/253 SCBs

blk: queue c1ab7614, I/O limit 4095Mb (mask 0xffffffff)
(scsi0:A:3): 20.000MB/s transfers (10.000MHz, offset 8, 16bit)
  Vendor: BNCHMARK Model: DLT1 Rev: 5032
  Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
blk: queue c1ab7814, I/O limit 4095Mb (mask 0xffffffff)
(scsi0:A:5): 20.000MB/s transfers (10.000MHz, offset 8, 16bit)
  Vendor: BNCHMARK Model: DLT1 Rev: 5032
  Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
blk: queue c1ab7a14, I/O limit 4095Mb (mask 0xffffffff)

Is there something I'm missing the in the configuration somewhere?
