Wow, Steven's solution brings all of the professional polish to the solution
which is a bit over this casual desktop users head.

However, Globe Trotter, just one more idea, for one project that I worked
on I had three different configurations for emacs. I created a button in the
systen tray (KDE) for each one and then right clicked on each one and
customized the command line with the options required;
i.e.  emacs -fn 10x20 -bg black -fg white etc .etc.

Those button launchers ignore any system defaults.
