I forgot to mention that this is under KDE, but Galeon
has similiar whackyness ....

When I use the System Settings / Display applet, the
"Advanced" tab says my display DPI is 2438 x 2438.
The "set DPI" button allows me to enter my monitor
size (12" wide x 9" high), which it boldly calculates
to 2438 x 2438 DPI (I wish my paycheck was calculate
the same way). The "lookup monitor" button is grayed
out. The monitor type is a Viewsonic 17 (1782) which,
as I recall, I had to configure manually ....
I will try a generic 1280x1024 monitor setting.
