When that happened to me, it turned out to be filter rules that didn't
end with a "Stop Processing" action and the messages were matching
multiple rules so were being copied to the folder multiple times.

Your mileage may vary...

Thanks for the pointer, you're probably right about the mail filter. I
think I have it fixed, now to see what happens.
