RPM Database Emergency.

We are about to start distributing a prototypical machine configuration
to 50 other machines and disaster has struck. First I saw this error
from doing rpm --rebuilddb
error: db4 error(16) from dbenv->remove: Device or resource busy

I was told this was not a problem. Shortly after that the
installation of an rpm hung and subsequently the whole rpm database
seems destroyed.
rpm --rebuilddb hangs.
rpm -qa hangs

I am sort of at the end of my rope. The only progress I can make which
is tedious is starting from the beginning and create a database by
using a command such as : rpm -i --justdb --nodeps xxxx.rpm
for every rpm which works.

There must be a better way but I can't find it.
I need help urgently.
