USB Mouse troubles (input <-> hid)

Hello-

I'm new to the list (and group come the next meeting) and I've got a
question I haven't been able to resolve. I'm new at using Linux and
can't seem to figure this out.

My problem lies in getting my USB mouse to work in Linux Redhat 9
(console + X). This is after a kernel recompile. I know I have all the
USB modules in and mouse input in as well. My mouse is picked up by
Linux since a cat /proc/bus/usb/devices correctly lists the mouse as
present (or absent as the case may be). I think I've pinpointed the
problem but can't solve it. On my laptop, an lsmod gives:

<snip>
keybdev                 2976   0  (unused)
mousedev                5492   1
hid                    22148   0  (unused)
input                   5888   0  [keybdev mousedev hid]   **
uhci                   29232   0  (unused)
usbcore                78816   1  [hid uhci]

and the mouse works, while on my desktop the same command gives

<snip>
mousedev                5492   1
keybdev                 2976   0  (unused)
input                   5888   0  [keybdev mousedev] **
uhci                   29232   0  (unused)
usbcore                78816   1  [hid uhci]
<snip>

I've put ** where I think the problem lies. How do I get the hid driver
under the input?? I've looked w/o success in rc.sysinit and other
places but can't seem to get anywhere. It's probably something I missed
when I reconfigured my kernel .config file, but I was able to not have
this problem when I recompiled a new kernel for my laptop.

Help- I'm sure the error lies in something I did but I can't find
what....

Thanks-

Olivier
