With today big disks I mantain a copy of my system on another partition.

Now and then I do:

rsync -av --delete --exclude="/lost+found/" --exclude="/proc/**" --exclude="/mnt/hdb5/" / /mnt/hdb5/

/mnt/hdb5/etc/fstab must be changed to mount /dev/hdb5 as /.

Since this is a backup/test system, I put everything in one partition.

Grub (or lilo) must have an entry to boot this backup system:

title RH 2.4.20
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20 root=/dev/hda1

title RH Backup
root (hd1,4)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20 root=/dev/hdb5

All my testing is done in this backup.
