PCMCIA drive works during install, but not after

I installed Red Hat 9 on a Sony VAIO notebook using its PCMCIA DVD drive.
But when I reboot, the drive is not operable. Where would I look to see
why it would work during installation (and rescue mode) but not under
normal use?

The drive is a Sony DVD-ROM PCGA-DVD51. Inserting the card causes 2 beeps,
high and low. The message "ide-cs: GetNextTuple: No more items" appears on
the console. /var/lib/pcmcia/stab says "Socket 0: Ninja ATA". Apart from
the error on loading of ide-cs, I don't see anything amiss in the logs.

The PCMCIA howto suggests that the GetNextTuple message could be a "system
resource starvation" issue, but the suggested changes don't seem to help.

Any clues?

Thanks.

Chris
