For those following this thread, problem solved! Hooray! The mouse was configured as a PS/2 and that broke all of xwindows. It's actually a USB connection. I had earlier tried redhat-configure-XFree86 and it tried to do the configuration graphically and locked up so I thought all the redhat-configure commands would have the same problem. Not so. Redhat-configure-mouse runs as a character based program from the command line. Assumption piled on assumption always leads to a BITA although breaking xwindows instead of disabling the mouse seems like drastic punishment for the error. Anyhow, thanks to all who helped.
