2.6 kernel, console VGA support?

an occasional oversight with 2.5.xx kernel configuration
was to forget to select VGA console support, which led to the
complaint, "i booted the new kernel, and it just ... hung!"
in fact, it didn't hang, it was happily booting, you just
didn't get to see it.

with the latest 2.6.0-test1-ac2 kernel source, i noticed
that under

  Graphics support
    Console display driver support

there is still a menu entry for "VGA text console (NEW)",
but it no longer has a selection checkbox. i guess this
support is just built in now, even though the help screen
suggests that one should "Say Y" for this option, even though
there's no checkbox to do that.

that will certainly cut down on the complaints, but
the help screen is just a touch misleading, one would think.
