I ssh into my server off-site and use ssh's port forwarding feature. This is what the commans looks like: ssh -L 5050:scs.yahoo.com:5050 klemmerj@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Once that is done you can configure gaim (or whatever IM client you use) to work on port 5050 of localhost.
