Thanks to all who answered. 

I found that the source of my confusion was to put the plugin in the 
/usr/lib/mozilla-1.2.1/plugins directory instead of the
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins directory.

That's correct. 

I hope that ends the problems of my installation of Shrike. I've never
had so many problems! All pretty minor but they did occupy 3 of my
weekends!
