Yes, use the XFree provided nvidia driver or report the bug to nvidia & at
their forums ;-)

In all seriousness.. running binary only drivers is always a gamble, no one
in the community can debug them so your at nvidia's mercy for support. Even
sending a kernel crash dump to the LKML with a 'tainted' kernel (ie, non gpl
kernel modules) will cause them to be redirected to /dev/null in a hearbeat.

nvidia's forums can be a good resource from time to time though.. searching
and/or posting your problems there might help you resolve your problem.

Ps, you mentioned killing X from another machine; Doesn't killing X with
ctrl-alt-backspace work?
