That's only in the Red Hat kernels, which call the /sbin/new-kernel-pkg
script (see my other post recently on this).  That script is part of the
mkinitrd RPM, but it won't be called by default from the 2.5.x Makefile,
or from any 'vanilla' kernel downloaded from kernel.org.
