I tried loading some of the modules in a different order and used modprobe 
to load snd.o and snd-cs4231-lib first, then I was suprised to see that 
there were no errors.  But when I use play to play a wav file it says:
 
sox: Can't open output file '/dev/dsp' : No such device

the device file exists as it should
