Well, what packages did you install then? What version/arch of
glibc and rpm is installed right now?

rpm -q rpm glibc rpm-4.0.4-7x glibc-2.3.2-53


It's difficult to help you when you hold back the details.

Do rpm2cpio and cpio still work? Could you extract files from rpm
packages and copy them over your installed ones?

Yes, they still work. I've used rpm2cpio to convert rpm-4.2.1 to a cpio archive. What next? Is there some clever way to have cpio install the files correctly - or do I do it by hand? Never used - heard of - cpio before, but I'm reading as fast as I can.
