Older versions of up2date didn't handle kernels too well, but newer
versions do fine.  I would think the reason they are excluded is that you
must reboot to use the new kernel.  I'd hate to update a kernel and forget
about it until I'm restarting a machine for another reason and get an
unexpected version.
