>From my experience, steps 6-11 can be replaced by typing 'make install'
which will do all the steps above. 
Also, for 2.5 kernels you will need updated versions of some packages
(modutils, mkinitrd, etc.), which can be found in rawhide. Look for other
kernel related discussions on this list for additional information.
