The family being 6 and the model being 5 add even more to my confusion. I'll have to check out what a pentium pro actually is.

I'll save you the trouble...this is the /proc/cpuinfo from my PPro 200 system:

processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 1
model name : Pentium Pro
stepping : 7
cpu MHz : 199.310
cache size : 256 KB
fdiv_bug : no
hlt_bug : no
f00f_bug : no
coma_bug : no
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 2
wp : yes
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 sep mtrr pge mca cmov
bogomips : 397.31

Thanks for the info from the cpuinfo. I am assuming that my computer is an i686 processor now (not pentium pro, PII normal, w/ MMX). I'll just compile the kernels as i686, no 586 tries.

About the Celeron and Deschutes names. I guess it doesn't matter for a build.
