Yep, I figured it out after re-tracing my steps, and with a number of people pointing out that I was touching the wrong place. I put in too many consecutive hours working to get mythtv up and running, and didn't read too carefully while working on alsa. I've actually got alsa (and all of mythtv, for that matter) working now.
