Unable to record sound

I seem to no longer be able to record sound (SB Live 1024). It works
fine in all other respects.

This is either (a) since I went RH 8->9 (or maybe even 7.3->8) or (b)
moved to using ALSA (using FreshRPMs)... or (c) something else :-/

I've fiddled in both the alsa mixer & GNOME mixer; mic. level works,
in that I can hear myself tapping on the mic. through my speakers, the
'rec' button is selected in both for mic. But gnome-sound-recorder
(apart from crashing a lot after a couple of 'new...'s) seems to get
nothing.

Anyone any ideas? Or failing that, any pointers to sound/wave
editors that show the input sound level of the thing they're listening to?
