In fact smartmontools is an evolution of the smartd,smartctl you get in kernel-utils. Smartmontools is FAR better documented (a requirement for something as technical and close to hardware), has additional possibilities and looks like it knows of evolutions of the SMART standard who didn't exit when the original smartd was finished. Now what remains to do is persuade RedHat to smartmontools is the way to go.
