I don't use the Linux GUI for anything, and I'm a strong Linux advocate (see my sig). If you really want to learn Linux, you don't learn the GUI - you learn the shell(s) and you learn where where the config files are and how they work. If anything breaks in a future release, you can more quickly find out out to fix things. Personally, my GUI is XP Pro. It's good at what it does.
