I don't think DESKTOP should actually affect the choice of display-manager at all. There's still some ambiguity about whether Frederico wants to change the displaymanager (GDM/KDM/XDM), desktop environment (GNOME/KDE/XFCe/CDE) or window-manager(Metacity/twm/fvwm/Blackbox/fluxbox/etc).
