/usr/src and mounting /usr read-only

  except for the act of

  1) building new kernels, and
  2) building src rpms

there seemed to be little reason not to mount /usr read-only,
so a few days ago, i did just that and have been running
happily ever since. if i need to build a new kernel, i just
remount RW temporarily for the duration of the build.

so this has finally motivated me to move what's normally stored
in /usr/src elsewhere. certainly, from what i can tell, i'm free
to store and build kernel source anywhere, so i plan on moving
it to my non-root home directory.

also, from what i read, i can configure "rpm" and "rpmbuild"
to work with a directory other than /usr/src/redhat with their
config files.

anyone else set things up this way? comments? potential
drawbacks? something horrific i've overlooked?
