You asked lots of questions. I'll try to help with a few...

The "Add/Remove Programs" is really nice, but I found rpms on the cd which do not appear there, e.g. the prelink-rpm. Am I on crack or are there rpms shipping with RH9 which you cannot install with the GUI?

You are exactly right. The GUI installer doesn't show all available RPMs. The same was true in RH8, where the GUI installer made it's debut. Odd, isn't it? Another odd thing about the GUI installer is that it forces you to install a "base" set of RPMs in each category, then has optional RPMs you can select. For example, to install the MySQL database, if you use the GUI installer, you are forced to install Postgres as well, since Postgres is a base RPM in that category. Of course, you can manually install MySQL by itself, or manually uninstall Postgres if you don't want it, but something smells about this arrangement.

Is there a way (using a GUI) to search through the available rpms on the cds (as you can do in mdk)?

Not that I am aware of. There are third party programs that can do this for you, or you can do it the low tech way like I do. When I get a new RH release, one of the first things I do is load each CD and:
1. cd /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/
2. ls -1 * > ~/cdN.txt
where N = 1, 2, 3, etc.
Then, I can grep the text file for program names to find out where they live on the CDs.

Keith
