the following seems to work for me:
icarus pts7) # ll bash*
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root          321 Nov 12 14:38 bash-prompt-default
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root          319 Nov 12 13:17 bash-prompt-screen
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root          264 Nov 12 13:17 bash-prompt-xterm

Below is what I use for PS1 on an XTERM:
# PS1="(\\h pts\\l) \\$ "
