Linux probably doesn't support your motherboard's AGP port. I wonder if you have a VIA 86XX, like my machine at work:

$ /sbin/lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8605 [ProSavage PM133]
  (rev 81)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8605 [PM133 AGP]

Look around for information on hardware driver support before you buy your next motherboard (which is maybe not too far off?)
