I have no idea, possibly some memory problem (try memtest86?), but who
knows. You may want to try out the latest development Gimp though, works
great for me, and at last you get easy access to all the fonts you drop
into ~/.fonts! :-)

I've got an rpm package which can be installed alongside the 1.2 gimp (use
-ivh to install, not -Uvh) here :
