one of you is using the gcc3 rpm and the other is using the gcc2.9 rpm, right?

Had no problem. I'm using that exact rpm you installed and created the symbolic link in '/usr/lib/mozilla-1.2.1/plugins' and all works fine. No extra settings or tweaks needed.
