I should clarify: I mean a linux application, but which is capable of scanning the (linux) system, _as well as_ files from any other OS, usually attachments from email sent by Windows users. Hence the ability to also scan and detect windows viruses such as MS Office macro viruses. e.g. though I know that a VB script cannot run on my linux system, if I can detect that there is such a virus of exploit attached to an incoming mail, I would be able to advise my correspondent that a suspicious or infected attachment was received with his/her message. I like the H+BDEV Antivirus, but I don't have the brains, savvy, whatever to compile dazuko so that it will regularly scan the system... so I'm looking at other alternatives. Also, thanks to all who responded: this is a most informative thread,as I'm learning about some products of which I was not aware heretofore.
