Problems with 8-bit characters in Pine and MC under RedHat 9 (and8.0)

Hi,

In RedHat 7.3 my lovely three Swedish chars showed up correctly but in RedHat 8.0 and 9 they don't in Pine and MC :-(

I have "character-set=iso-8859-1" in my .pinerc and
I have tried starting pine in environments where I not have
LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
e g I've tried "en_US", "sv_SE" and "sv_SE.ISO_8859-1", but the Swedish chars stills look trashed. In RedHat 7.3 I had LANG="en_US" and it worked perfect.

What is strange is that the Swedish chars looks ok when I type them in "konsole" and in "xterm". Only when I start Pine or MC they are destroyed. When I change the LANG environment they look trashed in a bit "different way".

Anyone got an idea of what may be the cause to this problem? It really works fine in RedHat 7.3 and I have tested from a fresh account.

Thanks for any hints!

Best regards,
Jan
