nor i.  just today, i was, all at the same time on my laptop, downloading
one ISO image at 350K/sec, burning a second, and "unzip"ping a third ISO
image (don't ask why it was zipped in the first place -- it just was).

i had some pretty serious throughput happening, both on the hard drive
and the CD burner.  not a problem.  (and, of course, i was browsing
and reading my mail at the same time.)

if you're having that kind of grief, i'd do as mr. diehl suggests.
i think you have some non-shrike related HW problems.
