via82cxxx_audio sound outputs random garbage

kernel-2.4.20-8 and kernel-2.4.20-9 seem to exhibit this new problem
with my via82cxxx sound device that didn't happen during Phoebe or
earlier Red Hat Linux. After using my Sony FXA36 athlon laptop for
several hours chatting on gaim, it would begin to output this random
garbage from the sound device. It seems to be isolated to the PCM
channel because it disappears when I lower it to zero or mute it. These
errors appear in dmesg.

via82cxxx: unknown number of channels
via82cxxx: unknown number of channels
via82cxxx: unknown number of channels
via82cxxx: unknown number of channels
via82cxxx: unknown number of channels
via82cxxx: unknown number of channels
Assertion failed! chan->is_active ==
sg_active(chan->iobase),via82cxxx_audio.c,via_chan_maybe_start,line=1351

Known bug? I've been using Red Hat Linux on this laptop since RHL7.2
and I haven't seen this problem before. =(
