Re: can't get PCMCIA working?

Ok, I tried this. I copied the /etc/pcmcia/config from a Dell laptop running RH 7.3 to this Toshiba running RH 9 and when I restarted the PCMCIA service I got:

[root@xxxxxxxxxxx pcmcia]# service pcmcia stop
Shutting down PCMCIA services: done.
[root@xxxxxxxxxxx pcmcia]# service pcmcia start
Starting PCMCIA services: /lib/modules/2.4.20-9/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/yenta_socket.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.20-9/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/yenta_socket.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.20-9/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/yenta_socket.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-9/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/yenta_socket.o: insmod yenta_socket failed
[root@xxxxxxxxxxx pcmcia]#

Then I checked dmesg and saw a bunch of these:

PCI: No IRQ known for interrupt pin A of device 02:04.0. Please try using pci=biosirq.
PCI: No IRQ known for interrupt pin B of device 02:04.1. Please try using pci=biosirq.
PCI: No IRQ known for interrupt pin A of device 02:04.0. Please try using pci=biosirq.
PCI: No IRQ known for interrupt pin B of device 02:04.1. Please try using pci=biosirq.
PCI: No IRQ known for interrupt pin A of device 02:04.0. Please try using pci=biosirq.
PCI: No IRQ known for interrupt pin B of device 02:04.1. Please try using pci=biosirq.

To get my ethernet card to work, on my 490CDT Toshiba Laptop. I had to pull the /etc/pcmcia/config off of a previous 7.3 installation and replace the version in 8.0. - I got some errors with the 8.0 and it never worked without bringing it up from 7.3 to 8.0 before.

I saved the file to a floppy. Then did a fresh install of RH 8.0. It didn't boot with the 8.0 version of pcmcia. But taking the copy of my 7.3 configuration file yielded a working connection to the Internet.

Something seems to be wrong with the changes to the file. I have no idea. But carrying around the cinfig file from upgrade to upgrade seems to be what I need to do.

I used to have to run modprobe pcnet_cs in my /etc/rc.d/rc.local file for RH 7.3. I didn't have to run modeprobe in the rc.local file with the clean install of RH8.0.

Oh well, maybe some day, it will be fixed.

Good luck,
