Well Ctrl-Alt-F[1-6] typically would give you a login prompt. I don't know your problem but yesterday, I pressed CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE while in X and my computer instantly turned off. Turned out, that the system BIOS traps that key-combo in the power management setup of BIOS.
