If the programme is installed from source, rpm would not track it. RPM 
only tracks packages installed by RPM, which makes sense, doesn't it? 
Install the Maximum RPM book that comes with your RH8.0 install CDs, 
and read it.

Secondly, network configuration using the shell is well documented. Have 
you read the redhat manuals, and various howtos on the net? If not, 
then here are some links.

The "man" command is also handy. Stuff like "man ifconfig", "man route" 
is good to read through.
