I bet you don't have an IP address 127.127.1.0 available on your net and
the failure is because it couldn't connect.

If all you are trying to do is keep your local LAN in sync, you can pick
one machine and use rdate in cron to sync the rest to it.

If you really need to have accurate time, you're going to have to have
an outside clock available somewhere to which to tie your primary
machine clock.

i wanted to configure an isolated time server for my lan so i added the
following lines to
etc/ntp.conf file 
server 127.127.1.0
fudge 127.127.1.0 stratum 10

i commented all other lines except drift file line then i started the
ntpd by
 /etc/init.d/ntpd start  it gives the following message
synchronizing with time server    [FAILED]

  even during the boot process it is giving the same message .what could
be wrong?
