cdrecord can't find cd-rw

Hi,

Back in April I was able to use cdrecord on my RH 8.0 system
to burn RH 9.0 CD's from the ISO's I downloaded.

'cdrecord -scanbus' worked then, producing:

  Cdrecord 1.10 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2001 Jorg
    Schilling
  Linux sg driver version: 3.1.24
  Using libscg version 'schily-0.5'
  scsibus0:
   0,0,0     0) '_NEC    ' 'NR-7800A        ' '1.0B' Removable CD-RO
   0,1,0     1) *
   0,2,0     2) *
     "         "

Since then I've upgraded the kernel to 2.4.20-13.8, using up2date
instead of doing it 'manually'.

Now, I'm was preparing to create a boot CD with mkcdrec and I ran
'cdrecord -scanbus' again, only this time it bombs:

  Cdrecord 1.10 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2001 Jorg
    Schilling
  cdrecord: No such file or directory, Cannot open SCSI driver.
  cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make
    sure you are root.

I did run it as root.

/sbin/lsmod tells me:

  Module Size Used by Not tainted
  sg                     36556   0 (autoclean) (unused)   # why ???

  jbd                    51956   2 [ext3]

/bin/dmesg shows the drives are recognized:

  hda: IC35L060AVER07-0, ATA DISK drive
  hdb: Maxtor 6E040L0, ATA DISK drive
  hdc: _NEC DV-5800A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
  hdd: _NEC CD-RW NR-7800A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive

grub.conf looks like this:

  default=1
  timeout=10
  splashimage=(hd1,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
  title Red Hat Linux (2.4.20-13.8)
        root (hd1,0)
        kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-13.8 ro root=LABEL=/ hdd=ide-scsi
        initrd /initrd-2.4.20-13.8.img

Anyone have any insights into what changed since before the
kernel upgrade?
