USB printer dead in RH8, not in other Linuces

Hello, I have an HP DeskJet 3425 (USB) which functions properly under Knoppix but not under RH8. I've tried the following already:

- Installing a new driver as per linuxprinting.org's instructions
- Using the generic HPDJ driver from CUPS
- Upgrading CUPS and hpijs from RawHide
- Using LPRng instead of CUPS

Jobs get sent but not printed. I get a message saying "media tray empty" from CUPS, except when I'm using the generic DeskJet driver.

I use kernel 2.4.18-27.8.0 from RH8 updates. cat xxx >/dev/usb/lp0 doesn't work either. Can it be a kernel/USB problem? This is the output of my lsmod:
