redhat 8.0 proliant 3000 doesn't like new kernel

Greetings, all.

I upgraded my Proliant 3000 from 7.3 to 8.0. Here's my laundry list of
questions:

1) I have the same problem that was posted back in Feburary, i.e.
during boot up, one processor shows fail. Has there been a fix for that,
or a workaround? Currently, I just pulled out a proc, and am making
due.

2) After the upgrade, I noticed that the new kernel (2.4.18-26.7) won't
boot, in smp, BOOT, or regular. It seems to get started, but doesn't
load my Compaq array drivers and craps out. Luckily, I'm still able to
to boot on an old kernel (2.4.18-17.7.x) to keep my users from beheading
me. As my kernel tinkering skills are feeble, what's the easy way to
change the new kernel to load the right stuff? Should I just follow the
how-tos and build a new kernel from scratch?

Thanks in advance,

-dd
