Here's one way NOT to do it. 

I had plenty of disk avail, so when a new version became available
(was it 7.1->7.3 or 7.3->8.0 ? I don't remember)
I did a dual boot with different versions on different partitions
using a common /home partition. 
I was using kmail at the time. The new version changed something
in the indexing of mail and once it was reformatted trying to use the
older version corrupted mail badly.
