Thank you. That works. I guess when I ran the install as myself, it didn't complain about needing root access.

I encountered the same problem. I saw a closed bug ( http://mozdev.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=3395 )which has the solution - install the spellchecker while running mozilla as root. After doing that the Spell icon appeared for my user account.
